A poem about heartbreak by David Tombale: My Radio

This poem was inspired by one of my favorite songs of all time, Ne-yo's So Sick from his first album. I think the message in it was one which a lot of us saw something of ourselves in and it finally motivated me to try my hand at writing it's poetic equivalent.

Too many times and too many words

reveal the answers in my lies,

I swore I'd never hurt again until I

let you see how much I cared,

just another time when I failed to see

the actions in my thoughts-

the indifference that shattered

like a shell I hadn't known before,

that I hadn't known I wore,

yet listen here, listen if you

think it's you I'm mourning for

you haven't known me long.

There is another who scarred me long before,

new scars on old wounds only numb

what wasn't raw,

You can't hurt me child

Too many times and too many love songs

they don't sound like they did before,

my soul aching now I know I wasn't wrong

This flesh crawls, this mind bends

around the river bends and I don't

know what empty fields it's looking for,

some aloneness I know we crave.

Listen here child there is nothing

you are breaking that isn't broken but

with you I thought I could forget

You said I love you,

said it sweetly but made me wonder

 far too often

Too much anger,

too much anger,

I love you,

Don't you mean I want you different?

Change for me?

Too many love songs,

I think I've heard it all so I stood up and

reached out to switch my radio off.

A poem about regret by David Tombale: The weight of my heart

The weight of my heart is about the regret that can sometimes result from a breakup in which one or both of the lovers still carry a torch for the other person. It's one of the worst things that can happen to someone who's trying to move on and I hope I managed to perfectly capture that situation.
The weight of my heart

Heavy as the morning that
Peeks beneath my shades,
Heavy as the evening that's
Come and gone filled with
Shades of moments past;

Heavy heart I pray you shall
Not break, little tear begging
Me to let thou fall but I shall
Not, I allot no time for misery,
I know he wants to rest here
Once again;

How heavy, like spilt paint
I tried to fashion into a scene,
She and I someplace warm,
Silhouetted against the horizon
Of a falling sun but the image
Shatters as I try to stop it;

Alas some things failed to
Happen, a forever now long
Betrayed, so heavy is this
Moment when I think of thee
And fail to brush away the tear
That tore itself from my
Stubborn grip.

A poem about heartbreak by David Tombale: Black Magic

Black magic as a sad love poem was originally meant as a letter to an old ex. The basic idea here is one of I've repeated a few other times in other pieces that it is not enough to be in a relationship and that mistakes happen but our true happiness can only be found by connecting with someone who understand us.
Black magic

A shadow walked around
with the peace that’s been missing from her mind
or perhaps a distant smile
and somehow I know that thought she keeps
hidden from her eyes is all of him,
like somewhere far but he still summons her,
a sorcerer leaves us spellbound
his absence felt and heard,
is it wrong that this pauper amongst princes thinks of her?
Follows behind her stately walk?
I will follow on until the ending of an age
and as the years progress and the black turns to grey
it is I still standing here begging you to stay,
alas the silence,
she looks upon me,
harsh emotion rocks me,
I feel the distance and I am swimming in it,
a ship somehow cast adrift,
the ice floes bobbing in my view
but I come towards them willingly
begging only to be sunk,
to vanish into depths that will wash me dry
and leave me relic of  someone else’s life.

A poem about heartbreak by David Tombale: The last train

This sad love poem doesn't just address losing someone you love but also touches on travelling to escape a life you can no longer stand. It's not only about heartbreak, it's about and self.
The last train

My train is late again,
I hear its wheels rumbling gently on the rails
as it travels near to take me far away

I have to go you see,
there is nothing here that I’m living for
so I think I’ll ply my trade there out at sea,
lifting my sun burnt face to watch the stars
sparkling in the sky

I’ll tell the wind someday
of all the places I have been,
my sojourn amidst the catacombs in Paris,
my time spent sketching the skylines in New York
and when I’m done
perhaps I’ll find my way back to that place where I was born
but I have no hopes

I lost them on that last day in July,
the seasons turned and you were gone
now I’m going down these famous roads
trying to find some meaning in goodbye,
a riddle answered by my thoughts.

A poem about heartbreak by David Tombale: Beautiful summer days

This poem was written for a contest about memories of summer. This sad piece covers another personal memory picked from my mind about a girl I used to know long ago.
Beautiful summer days

I spent my summers by the river
Whispering these sweet sweet
Words to that laughing girl,
Captivated by the loveliness of
Her smile, honey gold hair and
That carefree laugh I likened to
All the warmth the sun could give.

We lay by the bank of that
Quiet river as the larks sang
In the trees and she made me
Smile as she stroked my cheek
That girl in her Sunday dress,
It clung to her as I clung to her,
Touching rounded curves so
Damn slowly.

Those beautiful summer days filled
My world with so much light
I wish I'd captured them in my
Granny's jars. I loved that girl
All summer long as we ran
And fell and danced in places
That only lovers knew.

Eric tells me that she is happy now
In another Sunday dress with rounded
Belly, a little present lies huddled
In mother's warmth, little baby
Did you know that once your mommy
Loved a boy in the sweltering days
Of summer that we thought would
Last forever?

A poem about heartbreak by David Tombale: Only In A Dream

This poem was inspired by a personal experience of losing someone I loved to someone I didn't even know. The idea of watching someone fall out of love with you while you find it hard to let go was one I felt I just had to put down on paper.
Only In A Dream

Tis for love
I wandered down these halls,
played merry games from
summer down to fall

but now the merry making has
made too much of us,
the weary heads,
the empty beds,
I've grown sickened by it all;

That's why her laughter rid my
battered heart of all its cares,
that's why her words were sweet
music in this toneless hall,

she was my saving grace,
the amber nectar I only remembered
in my youth;

Too many things

I thought I saw in her,
my lover,
my promised friend until
she told me that she was leaving,
his face in all her dreams,
I caught a hint of it in the words she said,
is it any wonder that I am hurt?

I am wounded while he is happy
grasping a dream I wish

I'd never dreamed, still another's in my bed
staring at me with eyes so much like hers and

it only makes me wonder
how long before this fades?
Even as I try to linger in our kiss

still I wonder
how long before this too must go?
